The “Moonlit Wonder Works” at Century Link Shanghai serves as a key venue of Pudong sub-venue for the 3rd Shanghai International Light Festival. Centered on the narrative theme of “wishes and faint light”, it builds a healing fairy-tale pop-up installation with steampunk aesthetics, transforming the shopping mall into a dreamlike space collecting starlight and wishes. As a cross-boundary practice integrating commercial space and public light art, the project responds to modern urban residents’ emotional healing demands.

Beyond ordinary static mall decoration, it connects multiple zones including building facade, indoor corridor and open plaza. With original IP characters Moon Director and Little Mango Craftsmen, it creates a complete story world, transporting visitors from urban routine into immersive fairy-tale experience. Distributed across L1 and LG1 floors, the space contains three core scenes: the Moon Clock on facade of Gate 5 at L1, Starlight Corridor at Gate 8, and Wonder Station on LG1 open plaza.

The spatial styling blends vintage steampunk machinery and dreamy fairy-tale texture. The Moon Clock features a giant mechanical clock running through the building curtain wall, layered gear structures and warm lighting painting. The Starlight Corridor forms an immersive passage with suspended star installations and interactive star floor lights. The Wonder Station is designed as a fantasy station equipped with clock tower, red velvet curtain and hot-air balloon prop. Warm brown vintage metal frames match autumn-toned decor. It functions as photo spot by day and light show stage at night. Cute Little Mango Craftsman sculptures are placed along visitor circulation.

For fabrication, waterproof modular light panels are applied for outdoor facade. Indoor installations adopt lightweight prefabricated structures. Star sculptures are made of glass fiber reinforced plastic, while buried induction lights respond to footsteps. All installations are optimized for daytime visuals and night illumination. Modular components support fast assembly and dismantling, with multi-angle photo spots reserved for social sharing.

During exhibition period, besides art installations, night light shows, immersive performance and stamp-collecting gift redemption activities are arranged to combine sightseeing and consumption. In communication and marketing, leveraging city-wide exposure of Shanghai International Light Festival, the project targets young urban visitors, families and photography enthusiasts. With fairy-tale IP and night light scenery as core communication highlights, lifestyle KOLs are invited to shoot photos and short videos. Offline visitation links with content distribution on Xiaohongshu and Douyin, upgrading mall decoration into urban cultural event and boosting foot traffic and consumption.

This project embeds public light art into downtown commercial complex. With emotionally soothing fairy-tale narrative, it explores new modes of night-time economy for shopping malls and provides a curatorial reference for commercial real estate collaborating with urban art festivals.
