From June 1 to July 4, traditional Chinese intangible cultural heritage bamboo weaving brand onebamboo launched the large-scale three-dimensional curated exhibition *Temporality of Bamboo* at Rockbund Shanghai.
Breaking the conventional static display mode of traditional craft exhibitions, the project takes a “growth-oriented curation” approach and integrates Eastern constellation culture, the time-order philosophy of Hetu and Luoshu, and the architectural texture of century-old Art Deco buildings at Rockbund. Centered on a giant dragon bamboo installation, it creates an immersive urban wild bamboo forest that allows visitors to physically walk through and perceive the passage of natural time.
Covering two core locations including the HOUSE OF ROCKBUND central plaza and Lanchi Building, the exhibition integrates large-scale public art installation, bamboo craft display, handmade experience workshops, industry salons and co-branded cultural and creative products. It builds a cross-dimensional dialogue between traditional Eastern bamboo culture, intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship and contemporary urban aesthetics, conveying the temporal charm of nature and the vitality of handcraft to art lovers, design practitioners and cultural audiences, and forming a complete sustainable curatorial closed loop. In terms of spatial styling and visual aesthetics, the exhibition adopts an integrated color system of original bamboo green, log brown and architectural beige, which perfectly harmonizes with the historic Western-style architecture of Rockbund.
The iconic giant dragon bamboo installation is composed of premium dragon bamboos up to 30 meters tall with a stem diameter of 20 centimeters. Arranged in accordance with the trajectory of Eastern constellations, the upright bamboo poles extend upward to the building eaves, topped with manually woven spreading bamboo canopies that fully reproduce the complete natural growth process of bamboo from rooting and supporting to blooming. The free and flexible natural lines of bamboo contrast sharply with the neat geometric facades of century-old buildings, forming a unique aesthetic tension between Eastern natural vitality and Western rational architectural order. Natural daylight penetrates the layered bamboo canopies during the day, casting flowing mottled bamboo shadows, while soft ambient lighting outlines the texture of bamboo poles at night. The design creates an immersive wandering route of urban bamboo forest in the bustling city, presenting a changing oriental landscape scenery with every step. In terms of production and implementation, the project strictly complies with the protection specifications of historic buildings. Adopting original bamboo materials as the main creative medium, the installation retains the natural texture and handmade warmth of intangible cultural heritage bamboo weaving. The overall structure is stable, orderly and lightweight, realizing the symbiosis of natural bamboo art and historic architecture without damaging the original site features. Different from traditional intangible heritage exhibitions that focus merely on static display, this growth-oriented curation links diverse experience dimensions, empowering traditional bamboo weaving with modern and youthful artistic expression. In terms of project background and significance, against the backdrop of traditional cultural revitalization and urban public art upgrading, the exhibition extracts ancient bamboo craftsmanship from traditional folk scenarios and integrates it into Shanghai’s premium historic waterfront space.
